When I leave my pet cat behind while I study in China for a semester, will she forget me by the time I’m back?

My fiancee and I will be leaving to study in China soon, and even though she hasn’t said anything, I know she will miss our cat dearly, and I know that she will be extremely worried by the idea that our pet would forget us while we were gone. It would just break our hearts if we came back from China and found out that our cat had already moved on and “adopted” my fiancee’s parents as her new owners. I tried searching about this question online, but I only brought up results about owners and pets being separated by Hurricane Katrina. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge about this? If not, could anyone point me to a helpful resource where I could find the answer?

    No.

But she’ll act like she has.

She’ll miss you like crazy! But she’ll NEVER forget about you, I promise that. My cat has passed and STILL visits me, so no, she’ll never ever forget about you. But, its going to be such a hard adjustment for her when you leave. I suggest talking with her and letting her feel that you’re sorry you have to go but you’ll be thinking of her and you’ll see her after awhile but not be sad while you’re away. Our pets are smarter than people give them credit for. Good luck and I hope things work out :)

well it depends on how long you’ll be gone-i left my kitten when she was two and went to the UK for 3 years-when i got back she showered me with luv and purrs!she didn’t forget and i highly doubt yours will!

Cats don’t have very long memories and they are “homebodies”. Wherever they are is home, and whoever lives there too is family. Don’t worry about the cat not remembering you, look at it this way she won’t feel bad missing you and when you come back she will have “new” family to love. Hope this helps. Remember too that the kitty is loved and cared for and will be here when you get back. Hope this helps.

I brought home a kitten while I was living with my parents and when I got an apartment cats weren’t allowed so I left my cat with my parents. Not long after that I joined the Air Force and get to go home and visit once or twice a year. The cat still remembers me :) In fact, I’m the only person other than my parents that this cat will let touch him. He’s a very grumpy cat and doesn’t like anyone but my parents. Last time I was home he actually curled up in my lap (doesn’t do this to anyone but my dad) so I know for sure that he remembers me.

I doubt she would completely forget you, she might be a little shy towards you to begin with. It will be hard, you will basically have to start back from scratch unless you have had her for a very long time. Unfortunately, a cats memory is only about 16 hours.

Cats don’t really care about their owners as long as they have a good life and have someone treating them well. Your cat likes your fiancee’s parents because they take care of her. If you want your cat to like you and your fiancee again, I guess you have to take care of her again.
